Start of the Garden Route

Albertinia

Albertinia marks the traditional gateway to the Garden Route. It's a small Overberg-to-Garden-Route transition town with one legendary reason to stop: the Albertinia Slaghuis.

Why Visit

Stock up on some of the best South African biltong, droëwors and boerewors on the route. A perfect road-trip refuel and a taste of the Karoo before you hit the coast.

Southern Cape

Mossel Bay

Mossel Bay is the official start of the Garden Route and a superb overnight stop. Ocean views, warm swimming beaches, whale watching, shark cage diving, and one of South Africa's oldest lighthouses — all in one relaxed harbour town.

Why Visit

Mossel Bay is where the Garden Route truly begins. It has the warmest swimming water on the South African coast, an easy scenic hiking trail along the cliffs and the region's best-value marine wildlife day.

Garden Route Hub

George

George is the Garden Route's biggest town and the region's transport hub. It's easy to skip — but there are some brilliant reasons to build in a half-day stop, from craft beer to the Outeniqua mountains.

Why Visit

George is your gateway to the Outeniqua mountains, the Montagu Pass into the Karoo, and one of the Garden Route's best small breweries.

  • Outeniqua Transport MuseumHistoric steam locomotives from the Choo-Tjoe railway.
  • George Botanical GardensPeaceful indigenous gardens with a great picnic setting.

Lakes, Lagoon & Forest

Wilderness

Wilderness is where the Garden Route lives up to its name — indigenous forest, five lakes, a lagoon, long empty beaches and views that stretch forever. Slow down here.

Why Visit

Wilderness is my favourite Garden Route base for slow, scenic days. It is small, walkable, and has world-class canoeing, hiking and paragliding within 10 minutes of town.

5 min detour off the N2 1 – 2 hours

Quick Detour

Victoria Bay

Vic Bay is a tiny horseshoe cove between George and Wilderness — one of South Africa's most photogenic little beaches and a legendary right-hand point break.

Why Visit

Whether you surf or not, Vic Bay is worth the short detour for the view alone — a perfect turquoise bay hemmed in by cliffs, houses stacked above the shoreline.

Slow Town

Sedgefield

South Africa's first official Slow Town — Sedgefield sits on the Swartvlei lagoon between Wilderness and Knysna. It is best known for a legendary Saturday morning farmers market.

Why Visit

If you're on the Garden Route on a Saturday, Wild Oats Community Farmers Market is one of the best breakfast experiences on the coast. Otherwise, a paddle on Swartvlei is a great way to slow down.

Lagoon & Forest

Knysna

Knysna is the beating heart of the Garden Route. A vast tidal lagoon protected by the twin sandstone cliffs of the Knysna Heads, indigenous forests, oyster farms and a lively waterfront.

Why Visit

Knysna is the classic Garden Route base — waterfront restaurants, world-famous oysters, forest hikes, the Knysna Heads, the Featherbed Nature Reserve and one of the best sunset cruise experiences in South Africa.

What To See & Do

  • Knysna Heads (Eastern & Western)Iconic cliff formations at the mouth of the Knysna lagoon — walk out to the East Head Café for the view.

Plettenberg Bay on the Garden Route, South Africa
≈ 30 min from Knysna 2 – 3 days minimum

Beaches & Wildlife

Plettenberg Bay

Plett has the best beaches on the Garden Route, the region's most spectacular coastal reserve (Robberg), a cluster of world-class wildlife sanctuaries and year-round whale and dolphin watching. It is the highlight of many Garden Route trips.

Why Visit

Robberg alone is worth a full day. Add Birds of Eden, Monkeyland, whale watching and a beachfront sunset and you have one of the best 48-hour stretches on the South African coast.

Hidden Gem

Nature's Valley

Nature's Valley is a tiny village tucked between indigenous forest, a lagoon and one of the most unspoilt beaches in South Africa. No shops. No signal. Just forest, lagoon and ocean.

Why Visit

Nature's Valley is what the Garden Route looked like 60 years ago. It's a rare unspoilt slice of the coast — the perfect quiet counterpoint to busy Plett.

What To See & Do

  • Groot River LagoonWarm, safe swimming and paddling — no waves, calm water.

End of the Garden Route

Tsitsikamma

Tsitsikamma is the wild, forested, adrenaline-fuelled end of the Garden Route. Ancient yellowwoods, rugged coastline, waterfalls, and the world's highest commercial bridge bungy.

Why Visit

Tsitsikamma packs the biggest concentration of adventure activities on the Garden Route into one small area. Storms River, Bloukrans, canopy tours, kayaking and the Big Tree — all in half a day of driving.

Optional Detour · Klein Karoo

Oudtshoorn Day Trip

Just over the Outeniqua Pass from George, Oudtshoorn is the Klein Karoo capital — semi-desert plains, ostrich farms, the Cango Caves and, if you're up for it, the Swartberg Pass. A brilliant 1 or 2 day detour off the Garden Route.

Why Visit

Oudtshoorn is a complete contrast to the coast — a Karoo experience within a short drive of the Garden Route. The Cango Caves, wildlife interactions and the Swartberg Pass are unforgettable additions to any trip.

1 night · Fast taste
  1. Day 1

    Cape Town → breakfast at Dassiesfontein → drive to Knysna. Afternoon at Knysna Heads and sunset at the Waterfront.

  2. Day 2

    Morning at Robberg Nature Reserve in Plettenberg Bay → lunch at The Fat Fish → drive back to Cape Town or continue east.

3-Day Garden Route

    Cape Town → Dassiesfontein → lunch in Mossel Bay at Cape St Blaize → overnight in Wilderness or Knysna.

  2. Day 2
