Everything you need to know before booking your Hermanus whale watching trip.

Walker Bay (Hermanus) and Dyer Island (Kleinbaai / Gansbaai) sit side by side on the Overberg coast and are the two densest whale watching hotspots in South Africa. Use the map to compare them with Cape Town's False Bay, the Garden Route (Mossel Bay, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay) and Algoa Bay (Port Elizabeth).

Gansbaai is the town; Kleinbaai is its small harbour about 8 km east, and it's where Marine Big 5 and shark-cage boats depart into the Dyer Island Marine Protected Area. On the map they share one Dyer Island / Shark Alley marker because tours from Gansbaai leave from Kleinbaai Harbour.

Walker Bay is a Southern Right Whale calving nursery with sheltered water. Dyer Island adds Great White Sharks, ~60,000 Cape Fur Seals on Geyser Rock and African Penguins. False Bay and Algoa Bay have year-round Bryde's Whales and large dolphin pods. The Garden Route mixes migratory Humpbacks with resident Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphins in Plettenberg Bay.

Not yet. The map lists St Lucia (iSimangaliso Wetland Park) and Richards Bay as coming-soon KwaZulu-Natal destinations for Humpback Whale migration season (June–November). Contact us to be notified when bookings open.

Boat-based whale watching typically ranges from R1,200 to R1,850 per adult. Hermanus is R1,500, Mossel Bay from R1,200, Knysna from R1,300, Plettenberg Bay from R1,400, and Gansbaai Marine Big 5 tours from R1,850. Scenic flights and Yzerfontein Humpback expeditions are quoted on request.
