Hermanus Day Tour from Cape Town

Hermanus sits roughly 120 km south-east of Cape Town on the shore of Walker Bay — close enough for a comfortable day trip, far enough that the drive itself becomes part of the experience. Collection is from your Cape Town hotel, guesthouse or apartment at around 07:00, with drop-off back at your accommodation between 17:00 and 18:00. Clarence Drive (the R44) runs from Gordon's Bay around the eastern edge of False Bay through Rooi-Els, Pringle Bay and Betty's Bay. The road is cut into the mountainside directly above the sea and is widely regarded as one of the finest coastal drives in South Africa.

There are photo stops along the way, and in whale season it is not unusual to spot whales from the roadside viewpoints — though that depends entirely on the day. A short optional detour into the Harold Porter National Botanical Garden at Betty's Bay leads to the Disa Kloof Waterfall, an easy walk through fynbos before continuing to Hermanus.

Stony Point at Betty's Bay is one of only a handful of mainland breeding colonies of the endangered African Penguin. Entrance is included in the tour fare, and raised boardwalks take you right through the colony above the nesting areas.

This is a wild colony on a working conservation site, so the number of birds present varies with the breeding cycle, moulting season and time of day. Rock hyrax, cormorants and other seabirds are commonly seen on the same walk.

You arrive in Hermanus around 10:00 and have free time through the middle of the day, including lunch on your own account overlooking Walker Bay. The town centre, the Old Harbour, the craft market and the restaurants along Marine Drive are all within easy walking distance of each other.

A licensed 2-hour boat-based whale watching trip from Hermanus New Harbour can be added to the day. It is genuinely optional — it is not included in the tour fare and is booked and paid for separately — which makes this a practical Hermanus whale watching day tour for mixed groups where not everyone wants to go to sea.

The Hermanus Cliff Path runs roughly 12 km along the shoreline from the New Harbour to Grotto Beach. On the tour you walk a section of it in the early afternoon, taking in the Old Harbour, the cliffs above Walker Bay and the fynbos along the path.

In season, Southern Right Whales come close enough to shore that they can often be watched from the path without a boat — one of the reasons Hermanus is known for land-based whale watching. Migratory Southern Right Whales arrive in Walker Bay from around June and are generally present until early December, with peak numbers typically in September and October when they calve and mate close to shore. They are not present year-round — outside this window they are in their southern feeding grounds.

Humpback Whales pass along this coast on migration, mainly in winter and spring, while Bryde's Whales are resident in South African inshore waters and may be encountered at other times of year. A whale watching day trip from Cape Town outside the Southern Right season is therefore still worthwhile for the route, the penguins and the town, but sightings of the big migratory whales are far less likely.
