Walker Bay
Southern Right Whales in Walker Bay
Walker Bay's sheltered geography makes it the most reliable place in the world to see Southern Right Whales close to shore.
A natural nursery
Walker Bay's calm, shallow waters and steep coastal shelf provide ideal conditions for newborn Southern Right calves. Mothers spend up to four months here teaching calves to swim, dive and breach before the long journey back to Antarctic feeding grounds.
How close do whales come?
Whales regularly rest within 50–100 metres of the cliffs in Hermanus, and even closer to our boats — well within the legal 50 metre approach distance, often by their own choice.
Read more about the species on our Southern Right Whales page, or book a boat trip to see them yourself.
Ready for a Whale of a Day?
